Women at the newly relocated Laadli Empowerment Center

The most recent Covid outbreak in India highlighted a neighborhood with many women and girls who needed help. The Sur Sagar area of the city of Jodhpur has seen a population increase of new laborers and mine workers and their families.

Women from the neighborhood learned of the Sambhali Food Bank and with no income during the lockdown—and therefore no food—they found their way to Sambhali’s “Nourishing Community.”

“We knew the women were in desperate and continuous need of support, but we had never worked in the area before,” stated Govind Rathore, Founder of Sambhali Trust. Once the Trust was able to determine how best to serve, they moved the Laadli Empowerment Center “to their doorstep,” in Govind’s words, so that they could provide support close to home.

In its first month in the new location, 33 women attended classes in sewing, embroidery, Hindi, English, and math. They also began to learn self-defense and attended workshops on a variety of topics. Sambhali U.S. is grateful to be able to support the Center in its new location.
