Garima
Sambhali Trust’s Garima Project (meaning dignity) is a pioneering initiative that creates a safe, affirming space for members of the LGBTQIA+ community in Jodhpur and the surrounding areas. This project offers a drop-in center where individuals can access emotional, legal, and financial support from trained professionals, helping them overcome abuse and vulnerability. Garima provides a safe haven for learning about one’s rights and emotional well-being and fosters a sense of trust and belonging. Through workshops and long-term guidance, Garima empowers individuals to build confidence, self-esteem, and independence. Garima also works to create awareness and acceptance in the larger community through educational events including Pride month activities.
Key components of the Garima Project are its connection with other Sambhali Trust programs and its focus on vocational training. Garima works closely with the Nirbhaya gender-based violence program and the Sathi health care initiative to offer counseling, legal support, and access to medical services—especially important for LGBTQIA+ individuals who are often underserved. Those facing domestic violence or homelessness may also be referred to Sarai, Sambhali’s shelter program. The Sambhali Café and Sambhali Walks, proudly run by LGBTQIA+ members, serve as real-world training platforms in hospitality through the Sambhali Development Foundation. Since the decriminalization of consensual same-sex relationships in India in 2018, Sambhali Trust has been able to expand its support of LGBTQIA+ rights, marking a hopeful shift toward dignity, love, and inclusion.
