Ruby Atwal, Director
Ruby Atwal joins the Sambhali U.S. Board of Directors with a lifelong dedication to education and gender equality. Born in the United States to parents from India, Ruby was raised with the belief that education is the foundation for opportunity. “My dad always said that education is the one thing that no one can ever take from you. Once you’ve learned something, it’s yours forever.” This led Ruby to pursue a master’s degree in education at Teachers College, Columbia University. As an English teacher, she used literature to illuminate the challenges faced by girls and women worldwide, while fostering empathy and compassion in her students.
After several years in the classroom, Ruby pivoted to the technical writing industry—yet her commitment to advancing women’s rights didn’t fade; it only grew stronger with every passing year. When Ruby came across a volunteer opportunity at Sambhali U.S., she immediately got in touch. She now contributes as a website manager and writes content to expand awareness of Sambhali’s mission. Guided by her belief that “women’s rights are human rights,” Ruby is dedicated to amplifying the voices of the girls and women of Sambhali.
“After hearing stories directly from the girls and women in Rajasthan, I am in awe of their resilience to overcome such immense daily struggles. In a society that’s been working against women since the day they were born, their desire to gain an education and achieve independence is an inspiration to all who know their stories. I am honored to be part of an organization that provides the space and resources for girls and women to not only feel empowered, but thrive.”
